Those who came across the sea The first part of the name of the white-throated guenon is self-explanatory: out of the dark fur there is this radiant white ruff around its neck, chin and breast. More difficult to understand is "guenon", which comes from French and means "fright" and was probably coined because of the grimaces they make when afraid. In German they are called "Meerkatze", meaning "sea cat". This may have derived from the Indian word "marcatta", which simply means "monkey". Mood barometer White-throated guenons have rather long tails. Up to 83 cm have been measured on the animals, which have an overall length of 1.50 cm. When the monkeys jump from branch to branch they keep their furry steering rudder straight behind them. This is to keep their balance and climb at the same time. On the ground, the long tail serves as a mood barometer. If white-throated guenons are completely relaxed, their tail is held in a light curve upward.
To see and be seen White-throated guenons live in Africa, south of the Sahara from Kenya to Zimbabwe. They prefer gallery forests, groups of trees flooded with light that are neither too dry nor too humid. That’s where they feel secure protected by the trees and still able to see what happens all around.
unbelievable but true: Female white-throated guenons can still bear young at the age of 25, one young every other year. Normally, it is very hard to raise them in zoos. Yet in the Hanover zoo more than 40 young have already been raised, which have been passed on to partner zoos all over Europe.
