Lost in the Mists of Time
On the highest hill in the zoo, seven gorillas inhabit a spectacular forest landscape - lush vegetation, a bubbling stream and a thundering waterfall to recreate the East African homeland of these gentle giants. Panorama windows set into the rocks look out over the idyllic scene.
The path to Gorilla Mountain is an evolution trail with footprints tracing the story of human development.
Faithful copies of archaeological finds and scenes of Stone Age burial rituals remind us that back in the mists of time humankind and apes had common ancestors.
An archaeological dig, abandoned research camp and a stranded Land Rover testify to the hardships that scientists underwent to unveil the mysteries of the human race.
At the foot of the mountain the gibbons, smallest of the apes, live on an island with lianas and trees to show off their astonishing acrobatic grace and daring. In the mornings the gibbons sing the boundaries of their territory! Their weird arias can be heard all over the zoo.
