Europe’s unique new zoo world grows day by day More animal attractions underway New prices for annual and day tickets
Canada, the great adventure: majestic wilderness, stirring tales of the gold rush, the icy Yukon territory, face to face with wild wolves and polar bears, panorama views of seals, penguins and polar bears under water from inside a grounded ship … unique in Europe, the dream of Yukon Bay theme world is coming true.
Already the brightly-painted timber houses along the harbour front, the harbour basin and grounded ‘Yukon Queen’, the crane from the top of whose jib polar bears will be fed from spring 2010 and the spectator stand in front of the seal pool are plain to see. The wolf enclosure is finished and the black timber wolves are getting used to their new territory as Yukon Bay’s first inhabitants.
The hilly landscape behind the wolves will be home to caribou and bison. Yukon River is not yet flowing and construction work on the riverbank continues under the wolves’ gaze.
New for 2010: little animals, big diggers Already work on the next animal project is beginning – an enclosure for prairie dogs, large burrowing rodents who can stand up like meerkats and sometimes bark like a dog. These hyperactive tunnellers look a bit like groundhogs. On the open prairie each family has its own territory with an extensive network of tunnels, its entrance marked by a mound of earth from which they keep lookout for predators and which protects the tunnels from flooding when the snow melts. The entrance tunnel goes five metres straight down and then into side tunnels ending in cosy chambers lined with grass. In Yukon Bay, Zoo visitors will be able to watch prairie dogs tunnelling at the old archaeological dig.
New for 2010: owl tower Hannover’s snowy owls will be moving from their dreary old cage to the wooden water tower by Yukon Bay’s gold panning. Another animal attraction will be great horned owls in the Canadian theme world between the wolves and the bison.
New for 2010: Down Under comes to Hannover Between the Indian Jungle Palace and Mollywoop children’s land, the Australian Outback will cover 5,300 m² for red kangaroos, swamp wallabies, emus, Bennett’s wallabies and wombats. The highlight of this red earth landscape, inspired by Ayers Rock, with its corrugated iron farmhouse and wind pump will be a stroll among the Bennett’s wallabies! The enclosure of these little kangaroos will be open to visitors.
New for 2010: world record at the Jungle Palace In 2010 five baby Indian elephants are expected between April And November to turn the Jungle Palace topsy-turvy! There have never been so many elephant births in a zoo in the space of one year before - Hannover can look forward to a sensation.
New for 2010: more parking spaces, more ticket booths and turnstiles Hannover Adventure Zoo is getting geared up for Yukon Bay. Ready for the opening in spring there will be another 320 parking spaces at the extended park deck, making 960 right next to the entrance, and to cope with the increase in visitors two extra ticket booths and turnstiles will be installed and the number of service staff increased.
Each year Hannover Adventure Zoo welcomes 1.2 million visitors; more than 60% have travelled more than 30 minutes, and 14% come from outside Lower Saxony. With the opening of the new Yukon Bay adventure world this catchment area will expand once again – another 200,000 visitors a year are expected.
Value for money With the unique Yukon Bay theme world, the Australian Outback, five baby elephants and many other attractions Hannover Adventure Zoo offers visitors a dramatically heightened experience for 2010. It would be fair to say that a Zoo visit will be incomparably better than before, and far beyond anything offered by a conventional zoological gardens.
Despite the enormous costs of constructing and operating Yukon Bay, Hannover Adventure Zoo stands by its commitment to value for money.
