Polar bear Sprinter moves to Yukon Bay

09.02.2010

Stop-over at the Zoo in Amsterdam

"Sprinter" from Rhenen Zoo (Netherlands) will be the third polar bear living in Yukon Bay, along with the twins Arktos & Nanuq from Vienna.

Until his new home is fully finished, Sprinter will stay in Amsterdam. Originally, he was to move directly from Rhenen to Hannover, but for polar bears the mating season has begun and his mother "Freedom" needs time alone with her lover "Victor".

Since Yukon Bay isn´t ready yet, the Zoo in Amsterdam offered to accommodate Sprinter temporarily in their old polar bear enclosure.

Amsterdam Zoo coordinates the European Conservation Breeding Program for polar bears and has decided that Arktos & Nanuq and now Sprinter are to live in Hannover. Together, the three two-year old polar bears will soon conquer Yukon Bay harbour. In about two years, when they reach adulthood, female reinforcement is expected.

As a result of the unpredictable weather conditions, an exact date for their transfer to Hannover cannot be given at this time.
